The biggest of the teeming Ten Thousand Islands, it can be found at the southern end of Florida’s Paradise Coast.

It is just 15 miles away from Naples and is encompassed by both the beautiful Gulf of Mexico and some untamed mangrove estuaries.

Its numerous places to visit range from eateries to beaches and from parks to museums.

History lovers will be intrigued by the storied past of the region, especially the legacy of the Calusa people.

Basically, there’s no shortage of stuff to do!

So, what should you do?

Here is our travel guide for the 26 best and fun things to do in Marco Island, Florida.

1. Cape Romano

Cape Romano

Cape Romano

Surreally bizarre and ethereally unique, Cape Romano is an abandoned gem of local lore in Ten Thousand Island.

It is a collection of strange, dome-like structures of concrete, once an ultra-modern vacation home now reclaimed by waves.

It is approximately 300 feet off the shore of Marco Island’s southernmost tip and is accessible only by water.

Cape Romano was built in 1981 by Bob Lee, a wealthy Florida oil producer.

Built on stilts and resembling igloos, it was designed specifically to be self-sufficient and eco-friendly.

They were heated with the use of fires lit beneath rooms in concrete pylons.

Their dome shape has a purpose, too, intended to collect and direct rainwater into troughs for the home’s use.

Despite an impressive resilience to extreme weather, natural erosion on the island eventually rendered Cape Romano unlivable.

The domes, looking right out of a science fiction flick, now only remain supported by their pillars that hold them above the water.

In 2001, the property was repurchased, but attempts at refurbishment have failed.

Interestingly, this odd photo opportunity also attracts game fish.

So if you’re an avid fisher looking for what to do, you might find some pretty good catches in this area!

One of the intriguing points of interest at this museum is the Key Marco Cat Statue replica.

It is a tall figure of a cat-like half-man creature, kneeling on the ground.

The original statue was uncovered during a Smithsonian expedition to this island in 1896.

7. Otter Mound Preserve

Otter Mound Preserve

Otter Mound Preserve

Up in the Indian Hills, Otter Mound Preserve beckons nature enthusiasts looking for what to see.

This historic site isn’t actually named after the fun, cute mammals we all know and love!

To understand its significance, we’ll need to take a little dip back in time.

Over the course of centuries, the native Calusa people would discard various shells from clams, oysters, and more in piles.

As shellfish were the main part of their diet, heaps of shells began to get larger and larger.

This led to the formation of a huge 80-acre mound.

The discarded shells turned the soil alkaline, allowing it to better preserve various stone tools, ceramics, and even bones.

Archaeologists, as you can expect, were thrilled!

The unique soil of the ancient mound also created a closed canopy forest called a tropical hardwood hammock.

This forest attracted various animals, such as raccoons, opossums, bobcats, grey squirrels, and armadillos, as well as close to 60 bird species.

The Calusa tribe eventually disappeared, leaving behind this incredible gift to nature in Florida.

150 or so years after the tribe faded, Ernest Otter, a white settler, moved here.

From the 1940s to 1997, he lived at the mound and used its shells to decorate and build his property.

The unique shell walls became an attractive feature.

With a mix of Calusa history, teeming wildlife, and shell architecture, the one-of-a-kind environment needed to be kept safe!

And, in 2004, that’s why the Otter Mound Preserve was founded.

Today, Otter Mound Preserve is a mere 2.45-acre space, yet it’s still interesting to walk around.

You can walk along the shaded paths to view trees like yellow elders, gumbo limbo trees, and strangler figs.

The outhouse that Otter built is still standing, as are his walls of lightning whelk shells.

The trails aren’t paved, so you’ll get a very unspoiled experience as you bike, hike, or run!
