The Gullah Heritage Trail owes its name to a group of West African enslaved people, known as the Gullah people.

27. King Neptune Sundial

The King Neptune Sundial is a rather fascinating spot, and visiting to get a quick picture is one of the fun things to do in Hilton Head.

It is located at the entrance to Shelter Cove Harbor and is a whopping 12-foot statue made of bronze – and also the biggest figurative sundial not just in Hilton Head, but in the entire world.

The statue depicts Neptune, who is known as the God of the Seas in Roman mythology.

He stands on a base that measures 26 feet in diameter, and this base is also a timepiece for the aforementioned sundial.

The statue, equipped with a strong trident, was built in 1983 by Wayne Edwards, a local of Hilton Head.

He designed it to be accurate by ensuring the trident was fixed to the solar south position using the Ursa Major and Polaris constellations.

It worked, and the King Neptune Sundial accurately tells time!
