Once upon a time, Country Boy Mine was among Breckenridge’s biggest gold mining operations.

At its peak in 1881, it was also one of the famous mines in this part of Colorado.

18. Reiling Dredge

The Reiling Dredge is a “floating” gold mine used for placer mining.

This form of mining was a part of Breckenridge’s long history in the mining industry.

It involves the use of digging up soil and rocks from the deposits of old streams.

This is done to separate gold, whether in flake or nugget form, from the debris.

The “traditional” way to perform placer mining was by hand. Prospectors would use flat pans in order to find claims with a good amount of gold.

This process was eventually sped up with machination, using rocker boxes, sluice, and riffle.

These items were fitted onto boats and used mechanical arms to dig with those buckets, all the way up to 50 feet deep!

The machines were referred to as dredges, and they would move upstream, sending large rocks and poor gravel behind them.

This eventually caused damage to various bodies of water.

The Reiling Dredge was one of at least eight of its kind used in the town.

Its name comes from engineer Herman J. Reiling, a highly innovative inventor in the world of mining machinery.

Dating back to the early 20th century, it is one of the last examples of these machines that exist today.

It ran operations from 1908 up to 1922, sifting rock totaling 2,000 cubic yards daily in its career.

Miles of tailings could be seen as it moved up French Creek from the Blue River.

The Reiling Dredge’s life ended in 1922 when it sank in a pond.

That is where it sits now, one of the more unusual Breckenridge attractions.

In 2015, its location was designated an endangered historic site.

In 2018, it was stabilized.

It can be seen by hiking from French Gulch Road for about three miles.

20. Edwin Carter Discovery Center

On the surface, the Edwin Carter Discovery Center looks like little more than a log cabin.

But this quaint location has significance in Colorado’s history.

It is this cabin that Edwin Carter himself called his home.

Born in New York in the 1830s, Carter traveled across America.

At first a merchant, he eventually joined miners eagerly flooding Breckenridge in search of gold.

Carter enjoyed a successful mining career, but he began to notice something that bothered him.

You see, all the mining activity – and industrial logging – was damaging the Rocky Mountains and its wildlife.

He was touched enough by this concern that he completely pivoted in his career and became an amateur naturalist.

His goal was to collect taxidermy specimens, aiming to be able to preserve them for future generations.

He feared that these forms of wildlife would be lost forever due to human action.

In the next several decades of his life, Carter amassed a collection of over 3,300 taxidermy specimens.

He filled his little cabin with them.

In 1897, he decided to sell them in Denver to a group of rich individuals.

He hoped that they would be used to start a museum – and his hopes came true.

Today, a majority of his curious collection can be found at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

Despite not having the bulk of his curiosities, the Edwin Carter Discovery Center does hold some things to see.

All manner of taxidermy animals is on display here, alongside lots of information on Carter’s life.

Many of those animals are, now, either rare or extinct, and we have Carter to thank for this preservation of their appearance.

26. Breckenridge International Snow Sculpture Championships

The Breckenridge International Snow Sculpture Championships occur every January in this lovely Colorado town.

Participants arrive in teams from across the globe to build impressive snow sculptures with all their creativity!

Each competing team receives a 12-foot snow cube weighing 25 tons.

These cubes are packed by volunteers through the act of stomping during Stomping Week, an event that takes place across the town!

The Breckenridge International Snow Sculpture Championships have been a yearly tradition since 1990.

A total of 250 different four-person teams compete, and the best 16 of them are selected for the final championship.

The teams use all manner of tools to create huge sculptures depicting various themes out of their allotted snow.

They must ensure that their sculptures remain standing and that they are finished by the deadline on Day 5 of the contest.

This amazing event has been one of the local tourist attractions since it began.

As a member of the “audience”, you’ll see gorgeous creatures, scenery, abstract works, and other structures made by the teams.

With no admission fee, it’s one of the most amazing free things to do in the area!

The sculptures stay up, near the Riverwalk Center, until about the middle of February.

27. Blue River Recpath

The Blue River Recpath is a gorgeous span of trail that runs from Breckenridge up to the town of Frisco.

It measures 8.8 miles in total and moves along Highway 9 and through Blue River Valley.

The Blue River Recpath is relatively easy in terms of trail difficulty, as it is fully paved.
